Honest Comparison · Real Numbers

How GlucoBeacon compares to 9 popular diabetes apps

Every price and feature below was verified from each company's own site or app store listing. Where a competitor genuinely does something better than we do — real-time CGM streaming, mostly — we say so. No fluffed numbers, no invented weaknesses.

Everything else, that these apps don't even attempt

This isn't a checkbox comparison — for most of what's below, there's nothing on the other side to check. These are things no app on this page does at all, not features they do worse.

AI Diabetes Assistant

A chat & voice assistant that actually knows your data — your real readings, A1C, meds, and goals — not a generic chatbot. Ask it a question, or just tell it "log my metformin" or "I had 40 carbs for lunch" and it logs it for you.

Fasting Tracker + glucose correlation

Live countdown for 16:8, 18:6, 20:4, OMAD or a custom window, plus per-fast time-in-range and hypoglycemia stats — and a cross-fast insight comparing your glucose during fasting windows vs. outside them, once you've logged enough fasts to see a real pattern.

Meal history & pattern detection

Log a food once and GlucoBeacon remembers what it did to you — "last time you ate this, your reading was 210." Automatic pattern detection flags foods that consistently run you high, across 14 different pattern types.

Restaurant Advisor

53 real chains, 3,700+ menu items pre-scored by glycemic impact into Best Choices / Good Options / Higher Carb — plus AI nutrition estimates for any restaurant that isn't in the database yet. Your favorite local mom-and-pop spot isn't left out either: remember it once with your usual dishes, and it behaves just like any other chain from then on.

Pantry, recipes & shopping list

Scan groceries into a pantry that auto-deducts when you cook. A 120-recipe library with real Keto/Vegetarian filtering shows what you can make right now from what's already on hand.

Appointments, scheduled by voice

A real calendar with conflict warnings — and you can just say "schedule my endocrinologist for next Tuesday at 2" and it's on the calendar, no typing required.

Diet-type intelligence

Real Keto and Vegetarian badges computed from actual net-carb math, not a guess — plus one-tap AI suggestions to modify any dish ("ask for it lettuce-wrapped instead") to fit your diet.

Home screen widget

Your latest reading, steps, and calories at a glance — with a one-tap AI voice shortcut right from your home screen, no need to even open the app.

Pricing, side by side

GlucoBeacon is the only app on this list with a one-time lifetime option — everything else here is a recurring subscription for as long as you use it. And "Free" below isn't the whole story: see the Real all-in cost column — every one of these apps still needs you to test with something, and that something is rarely free.

AppApp priceReal all-in cost/mo*
GlucoBeacon $4.99/mo · $49.99/yr · $79.99 lifetime $4.99 + whatever you already test with
Glooko100+ meter/pump/CGM sync, clinic-oriented Free ~$28–$580 (app free, but still needs a meter or CGM)
SugarmateCGM display/alerts only — requires Dexcom Free ~$350–$580 (app free, but Dexcom is mandatory to use it at all)
mySugrPRO unlocks reminders, PDF export, bolus calc† Free, or PRO $2.99/mo ~$28–$580 + $0–2.99 (app free/cheap, testing supplies aren't)
Diabetes:MSubscription mainly removes ads Free, or $4.99/mo ($49.99/yr) ~$28–$580 + $0–4.99
Carb ManagerKeto/macro focus, not diabetes-specific Free, or Premium ~$39.99/yr ~$28–$580 + $0–3.33 (doesn't even log glucose readings)
MyFitnessPalGeneral calorie counter, no glucose logging Free, or $19.99/mo ($79.99/yr) ~$28–$580 + $0–19.99 (doesn't log glucose either)
Glucose BuddyDexcom sync, coaching add-on From $19/mo ~$350–$580 + $19 (Dexcom-dependent, same as Sugarmate)
One DropCoaching + test-strip subscription bundles $19.99/mo, +$21–$80/mo for strips $41–$100 (the only one that's honest about this up front)
DarioRequires purchasing their proprietary meter $25–$70/mo $25–$70 (meter cost already bundled into their price)

*Real all-in cost = the app's own price plus a typical CGM or finger-stick strip cost with no insurance (full sourcing and per-device breakdown in the next section). Ranges are wide because a CGM ($220–$580/mo) and finger-stick strips ($28–$117/mo) are very different price points — see below for exactly which. † mySugr's bolus calculator ships in the UK, Australia and parts of Europe — it's not available in the US app. Prices current as of publication; annual/regional pricing can vary — check each company's own site before you commit.

The cost nobody puts on the app store page

An app's own price tag is only part of the bill. What you're actually testing with — a CGM sensor or finger-stick strips — usually costs far more per month than any of these apps do, GlucoBeacon included. Here's the real, sourced range for each.

What you're testing withTypical monthly cost, no insurance
Dexcom G7Cash retail price, varies by pharmacy$350–$580
FreeStyle Libre 2 or 3Retail; ~$130–$175 with a GoodRx/SingleCare coupon$220–$260
OneTouch Verio stripsTesting 3×/day, meter itself is usually free$63–$117
Contour Next stripsTesting 3×/day, meter itself is usually free$28–$34
GlucoBeacon$4.99/mo · $49.99/yr · $79.99 once — on top of whatever you're already testing with

Sourced from GoodRx, SingleCare, and manufacturer pricing pages; actual cash price varies by pharmacy, region, and coupon use. Dexcom also runs a Patient Assistance Program that can bring cost down to ~$45 per 90-day supply for qualifying low-income patients.

Whatever you're testing with, that hardware doesn't remember what a dish did to you last time, tell you if last night's fast was safe, or keep your meds and appointments in the same place as your readings — that's a software problem, not a sensor problem. GlucoBeacon is $4.99/month on top of either method, not instead of one, and it does the same job whether your test costs $30 a month or $500. See everything it adds on our Features page.

What you actually get

Most of these apps are built around one job — glucose logging, CGM display, or calorie counting. GlucoBeacon's bet is whole-health breadth: the same app that logs your reading also tracks your meds, blood pressure, sleep, and appointments, and correlates all of it against your glucose — privately, on your device. See the full breakdown of what each feature actually does on our Features page.

The science behind our numbers

Every calculation in GlucoBeacon traces back to a published clinical source — not a guess, and not a marketing number.

A1C Estimate

Nathan/ADA formula: (weighted average + 46.7) ÷ 28.7, weighted 1.0/0.5/0.25 for the most-recent/middle/oldest third of your last 90 days of readings — recent control counts more than a reading from 3 months ago. Requires at least 7 readings before an estimate is shown.

Time in Range & Glucose Variability

Built on the international consensus on continuous glucose monitoring metrics (Battelino et al., Diabetes Care 2019), adopted into the ADA Standards of Care: 70–180 mg/dL (3.9–10.0 mmol/L) as target range, hypoglycemia split into Level 1 (<70 mg/dL / <3.9 mmol/L) and clinically significant Level 2 (<54 mg/dL / <3.0 mmol/L), and coefficient of variation for day-to-day stability — tightened to <33% when insulin or a sulfonylurea is logged, per ADA guidance on hypoglycemia risk for those drug classes.

Glycemic Index Data

Our 176-food curated database traces to real lab-tested GI values (ISO 26642 methodology: fasted subjects, a 50g-carb portion, blood glucose tracked over 2 hours against a glucose reference). For mixed dishes never tested as a whole — nobody has run a clinical trial on "chicken enchiladas" — we compute a carb-weighted estimate and label it as an estimate, since even that standard technique runs 22–50% off a true lab-measured result.

Daily Carb Budget

Mifflin-St Jeor equation for basal metabolic rate, adjusted by activity level and goal, then split by your chosen carb-approach percentage — the same free tool available on our Carb Calculator page.

Net Carbs

Standard convention: Total Carbs − Fiber − (Sugar Alcohols ÷ 2) — fiber isn't digested into glucose, and sugar alcohols are absorbed only partially.

Processed Food Score

A 1–10 score informed by the NOVA food classification system (Monteiro et al.), applied across every GI food, restaurant item, and barcode-scanned product — alongside carbs and glycemic index, since how processed a food is affects more than just its carb count.

See it for yourself
